Diaper cakes used to be complicated folding concoctions that were created by professionals or the super crafty. Now, they can be created by anyone with the help of cake pans and ribbon. You won’t even need an abundance of clear tape to hold it together either! Take a look at our tutorial for this easy DIY Diaper Cake:
- Large Package of Newborn/Size 1 Diapers
- 3 wide spools of ribbon (one-two different colors/patterns)
- Cake Platter
- ¼ Inch Thick Wooden dowel (approximately 2 feet in length)
- Small Craft Saw
- Dollar Store Baby Shower Decorations
- Two Sided Tape or Clear Tape
- Shredded Crinkle Cut Paper
Divide a large package of diapers into three stacks. The stack that will be used on the top layer of your cake will require approximately 8 diapers. The middle stack will use approximately 12 diapers and the third will have the most, with 15 diapers. (You can beef up this cake by adding a second package of diapers and doubling the recipe. We were working with a frugal budget and this did the job just fine.)
Preparing each layer can be extremely easy using a cake pan. Turn your diapers horizontally and stagger the diapers inside of the pan, encircling the center with the top of your diapers pointing towards the pan center.
*Quick tip: I used a bunt pan, but any circular pan will work.
After you have added all of the diapers in the first layer’s stack, turn your pan upside down (keeping the diapers inside). Without removing the pan entirely, begin to wrap your ribbon of choice around the diapers only. One you have firmly gathered both ends of your ribbon around the diapers, remove your pan and finish tying your ribbon in a knot. Don’t worry about the bow at this time. Repeat with the remaining layers.
After all three layers are prepared, stack atop of each other working from the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. Point the tied ribbon in the same direction on each layer (centered together). Locate the middle of the diaper stacks and place wooden dowel through all three layers. Shorten if necessary with craft saw.
Prepare simple bows by tying ribbon in the same location your previous ties left off on each layer. Tie in a simple shoe string bow, fluff and straighten loops and trim ends to the desired length.
Place dollar store decoration on the top layer in lieu of the ribbon.
Adorn each layer with matching crinkle cut paper.
How simple was that? You don’t even need to be an expert bow maker to pull this cute cake off! The cost to make this diaper cake is less than $30 and your baby shower gift will be one of the most memorable gifts at the shower!
