I am having the worst time trying to keep clothes on my four year-old. Everything is either itchy, has a tag in it, too hot, too snug on the neck, not long enough, not short enough, or just plain “NO” with him. Even his go-to shirts aren’t working anymore. I had no idea what to do when all of my usual tactics stopped working for him.
A week before I hit my breaking point I ordered him an Avengers shirt and hat from Del Sol. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen! The shirts change color when they are out in the sun and don’t require hand washing either! I was so hopeful and even ordered a set for my older son too (so we could use the “See, bubba has on his Avengers shirt too!” technique when needed.) These are the shirts I picked out:
This shirt’s softer, comfier feel makes it an instant favorite by everyone who wears it. The fabric has been combed of any impurities and brushed for a softer hand.
• 4.3 oz., 100% Premium Combed Cotton Jersey for a finer, softer hand.
• 1×1 Baby Rib-Knit Collar that provides more stretch without
compromising the collar shape
Premium fit tailored closer to the body for a clean-lined silhouette.
Reliable choice for comfort, softness and durability.

A few days later I was teetering on the edge of wrapping my son in a blanket just to take him to the dentist because he was refusing to wear anything I put on him. My best technique has been to select clothing for him with his favorite characters on them, and to talk to him about the characters while he is being dressed. This has been very helpful over the years. It has only been in the past few months that this technique has been challenged. My tactic the morning of his dental procedure was this:
Shirt over the head and quickly placing the arms inside.
We cuddled. He cried, screamed, and after a few minutes calmed down enough to continue.
Pants on.
Kicking, screaming, crying, pants off.
Cuddles and hugs.
Pants on again.
Kicking, screaming, crying… pants stayed on.
More cuddles.
Anyone who has a child on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing disorder likely knows exactly what I’m talking about.
When our Del Sol color changing shirts and hats arrived I had no idea how he would react. I was super hopeful and a little terrified. If this didn’t work…. what next?
Shortly after the doorbell rang and the package was set on the table he was alerted and came running in to see what it was. “My package! My package!” he squealed.
Happiness and fear covered my face. Did you know both emotions could be on your face at the same time?
Yup…. it can.
Like Christmas morning the package was ripped apart by the boys and the “loot” was quickly flying out of the box. Within seconds he was asking for the merchandizing tag to be removed and to “put it on me!”
Whew…okay…gladly.
HE PUT THEM ON!
And wore them for TWO DAYS straight refusing to take them off.
Success. My greatest joy is watching him get excited over the shirt’s color changing in the sunlight. The longer he is outside the more apparent the color becomes. After seconds the shirt begins to change, getting darker (or brighter) the longer it is exposed to sunlight.
As a parent, it is really neat to look at your child in the car wearing a white shirt with some black detailing on it, and then a brightly colored shirt after a minute in the sun. I’m as entertained by this as the kids are.
My oldest son is fourteen and amazing! I don’t have the opportunity to brag about him on MDR enough. As most teen boys, he isn’t overly excited to get his picture taken but does give in from time to time. I was able to sneak this picture in as he was still in the “I can’t believe you got one for MEEE” stage of happiness. He was really surprised as I didn’t tell him I ordered one for him too.
His hat is a little big and he is jealous that the kid hat has a flat brim and the adult size hat doesn’t. If he could steal Little Man’s hat he probably would because he thinks he is a “flat brim kind-of guy”. Meanwhile… he wears this hat everyday (smile).
*Note: The kid’s hat is adjustable in size, but the adult hat is fitted.
We have had the hats and shirts for several weeks now. My oldest son’s shirt is easy to clean. I just turn it inside out and wash cold with like colors. My Little Guy’s Iron Man Suit T-Shirt didn’t hold up as well in the wash the first time we washed it. We had no idea and I wasn’t thinking about it when I tossed it into the wash. I recommend that you follow the washing instructions carefully and take preventative steps to avoid bleeding by washing on gentle for the first time. DelSol was very helpful in providing a resolution to our problem by replacing our shirt and I was very pleased with the replacement.
WOW Guarantee!
All Del Sol products are guaranteed to change colors in the sun for the life of the product, through normal use. Wash and dry it as many times as you’d like! (Follow specific washing instructions on product labels.)
Recommendations:
While I know that a major reason my younger son will wear the color changing shirt from Del Sol is because they are Marvel Avengers gear, I also know that he continues to wear them because they are comfortable too. The interior of the shirt is very soft, doesn’t contain any tags, and you can’t feel the graphics on the inside of the shirt. An added bonus is that the neckline isn’t constraining or too droopy.
I recommend Del Sol’s color changing shirts to anyone. They are very well made, high quality clothing, and really amazing!
